CO2 emissions from Shipping
- Twice that of airtrafic, (5% of the total emissions). could be 15-30% in 2050
- Rise of 75% because of growth of international trade in past 15 years.
- In 2020 emmissions will have grown with 30% to more als 1.5 million tons of CO2
- 90% of goods transported in world via ships
- Outside Kyoto protocol
- Fuel taken on board for international travel often not counted in for national emissions
- Fuel exist of the waste from refineries ( Bunker Oil) and is extremely polluting.
- Industry known as conservative, hardly any technological development.
- Some small tech development with support sails (saves up to 30% fuel on a trip) and biofuels, have had hardly any impact
- Transfer to cleaner fuels would use up all available diesel fuel produced in the wordl.
- 60.000 people a year killed by air pollution from shipping (sulphurdioxide, smog)
BUT!
- Per ton of good, shipping is still the most efficient way of transporting
- 20 grams pre ton-kilometer for shipping
- 50 grams per ton kilometer for road traffic
- 540 grams per ton-kilometer for air traffic
Maersk
- Has CO2 emmisions bigger as the rest of denmark
- Just launched an initiative to ship CO2 for CCS projects at sea
- World’s biggest shipper (more as a 1000 ships)
- Also is an (small) oil company
- Container ship uses 200.000 liters of oil
- 40-50 million ton of CO2 emmission a year
- With airtraffic and shipping accounted Denmark would be one of
- Among Europe’s biggest emitters
- Will reduce its emissions with 9% this year.
- Will lower the speed of vessel on the Asia route to reduce fuel use
